Building Alternatives Amid Crisis (in pdf format)
An exodus of historic proportion from the coffee growing region of
Matagalpa, Nicaragua; thousands of small producers abandoning their
plots in Chiapas, Mexico; and desperate coffee farmers in Peru turning
away from coffee and toward cultivation of coca. The "persistent low
coffee prices" we cited on this page last year reached catastrophic
proportions in 2001. Against this backdrop, how did Equal Exchange fare
in fulfilling its mission to build relationships with and markets for
our farmer cooperative partners?
