Photos and Interview by Ashley Symons, Marketing Writer
If you live in the Boston area, you can find Daniel Steinberg, the Equal Exchange Community Brand Builder, at the Copley Square Farmers' Market in Boston, Mass., each week this summer selling Equal Exchange products and engaging in some interesting conversations with customers and passersby. Here's what Daniel had to say about the farmers' market.
Ashley Symons: What do you enjoy about tabling at the Copley Square Farmers' Market?
Daniel Steinberg: Equal Exchange is dedicated to connecting the producers of our products with consumers. There is no better example of this than the Copley Square Farmers' Market. People are buying directly from the farmers who grew it. This is an ideal environment for Equal Exchange. I also enjoy the high volume of return customers we receive at the market. People look forward to our weekly appearance and keep coming back.
AS: Selling coffee, tea and chocolate might not be an obvious choice for a Farmers' Market. Why do you think it's important for Equal Exchange to be there?
DS: While our market stand sells coffee, tea, and hot cocoa, we are really focusing on our healthy snacks. We offer almonds, pecans, and cranberries from family farms here in U.S. It is exciting when people who know Equal Exchange as a chocolate, coffee, or tea organization learn that we are bringing the principles of international Fair Trade to farmers here in the States.
AS: How long will Equal Exchange be at the Copley Farmers' Market this season?
DS: Equal Exchange will be there every Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. through September 16.
Check out these photos from the July 15 Farmers' Market, which included a press conference with the organizers of Farm Aid with an appearance by John Mellencamp. It was announced that this year's Farm Aid concert will be held in Mansfield, Mass., on Sept. 20. Equal Exchange will be the official coffee provider for the event. We will also be giving out samples of our healthy snacks from family farmers in the U.S.
