Small Farmer Co-operatives & Family Farmers
We believe that family farmers are crucial to healthy communities, ecologies and economies around the world. Our over twenty years of Fair Trade experience has also shown that farmer co-operatives are one of the most effective ways to empower small farmers, invest in rural communities and build economic democracy today and into the future (we believe co-operation works for us, too!). That's why we prioritize working with farmer co-ops wherever possible and work to strengthen farmers' organizations. Our goal is to partner with farmers' co-operatives that believe in family farming, treat their workers fairly and equitably, are committed to more sustainable farming practices, and grow great food - and then connect these farmers with consumers who share their values.
Our first farmer partners in our domestic program come from across the US - a co-op of organic almond farmers in California, organic cranberry farmers in Massachusetts and Wisconsin, and a pecan co-operative in Georgia. All are family farmers, and people with a commitment to their communities, to growing delicious, nutritious crops, and to stewardship of the land they work.
