Equal Exchange is now recruiting classes to participate in a pen pal exchange with students in the Dominican Republic. Students write letters (in Spanish) to children of Dominican cacao farmers, from whom Equal Exchange buys Fair Trade and organic cacao for chocolate bars and cocoas. Through this project, we hope to increase students’ understanding of how they are connected to others around the world.
This program is for the 2008-2009 school year and participants are required to commit to full participation for that year. Teachers or club/organization leaders that would like to participate should download an application (pdf). Our goal is to get 1,000 U.S. students involved in this cultural exchange, so please spread the word!
Watch a video interview with Abel Quezada de la Cruz, a student in the Dominican Republic who is participating in this pen pal program. Abel is a 12-year-old seventh grader at the Los Botados school in Yamasa. His family grows cacao for CONACADO.
